Since there aren't living relics, some say that species have just changed slowly over time, since there haven't been full skeletons found that explain evolution, and others say that evolution worked, and then God came in during it and gave humans souls.

As to the old views on evolution, that's where some break away and some don't. Some argue that the Creator left in place ways for species to change over time including evolution, while some say what scientists are calling evolution is just genetic drift.
