I remember reading years ago about the origin of the phrase "dead ringer". A string was fed down into the coffin just in case they were still alive. I don't know if it's really true. If it is maybe that's where the phrase "saved by the bell" came from too

Yes it true little. They didn't have time to thoroughly examine the dead, especially when plagues swept through. You didn't have a pulse or didn't frost up the mirror...dead and on to the next.

There are cases where the bell was heard, by the time they were dug up...dead. But there were deep scratches and bloody prints on the inside of the coffin. Whispers in the wind my a**!
