Can someone explain why in the US, that dates are usually expressed in the format MM/DD, (September 11, December 25, January 26, etc.), but when they refer to their independence from England, they run back to mother England with "The 4th of July"?

I personally believe that the date thing wasn't changed because it was too late. America had started doing the opposite the rest of the world did, including which side of the road to drive. But the date format was forgotten... To late to change! Lol!
