I’ll Never Forget My Best Friend

I was three.
He was a few months.
Neither of us had much to play with….but each other.
We never lacked.
He’d look up at me with complete unwavering trust.
Trying to read my face.
Ears perked up when I spoke.
Wherever I went, he followed.
He rapidly grew, and soon we were face high to each other.
We’d roam the patch of woods up the hill from our place, him guarding my every step, sometimes blocking my way when I got too close to the cliff edge. I didn’t know it at the time.
I’d take my naps nestled into his chest.
He’d lie there, never moving a muscle.

As I grew to boyhood, he remained a part of me, my shadow.
We’d wrestle….he’d let me win.

We’d hunt.

We’d fish.

Not that he took part.
He was no hunting dog.
Just my companion.
We’d share lunch.
He’d listen, as we sat on the creek bank.

Years passed.
I got very busy, but not so busy that we wouldn’t still roam the woods every so often, even though he had a bit of a time keeping up.

The day came when he just didn’t get up.
I was sixteen.
Mom told me to take him in to the vet.
‘He’ll be able to fix him up.’

I gathered him up and laid him in the passenger’s seat of the pickup, right beside me, and we had one of our conversations while I drove the twenty miles.
It had been awhile.
Too long actually.

I sat on the stool beside the exam table, while the vet did his thing.
Once again my best friend and I were face high to each other.
The vet was talking with my mom.
He handed me the phone.
It was time.
He had to be put to sleep.

OK, I brought him in to get fixed up, and now he’s going to be put down….just like that.
I was told I had to leave the room.

Like hell.

I held his face with both hands, and his ears perked up as we had one of our conversations, telling him the reality.
I cradled his head, holding it to my chest, not moving a muscle until he went to sleep.

Even though the wipers were going, I had a hard time seeing through the rain drops on the way back home.

I’ll never forget my best friend

Well, another weekend of camping is over.
My temporary solution to a sagging camper roof worked out nicely.
The rain we had during the week didn't pool up on the roof.
(I climbed up on my truck to view the roof)

Now I'm just waiting to hear back from the fabrication shop on the costs
for the aluminum tubing needed for building my envisioned long-term solution.

I now have a light installed in the storage compartment, and an old CPU fan being used to cool
the cabinet where the stereo & CD changer is installed.
I tried adding my signature to a few emails once. That's when I learned Sharpies don't wash off LCD screens.

Plan on doing some for my extended July 4th weekend.
These short (normal) weekends have been more for
just minor projects and chillaxing with a book & a stiff drink.

A guy at work asked me about fishing, so a fishing outing is in the near future too.

Now my parents are wanting my help again with a couple things on their camper.
Last year I fixed a water leak resulting from insufficient winterizing of the water lines,
and fixed a leak in their vinyl roof.
Now they want to install roof vent covers like I have on mine, and they want to upgrade
the antenna to something like mine for better reception.

Oh, I finally had to switch over to the 2nd propane tank, after 4.5 seasons.
Just running the water heater and a couple times cooking on the stove, those 30 lb. tanks sure do last.

My wife's oldest sister was diagnosed with brain cancer a couple years ago. She's been through 3 surgeries with chemotherapy in between each. Every time the doctors have been optimistic that they removed all the the tumor to have it grow back twice it's original size within about 6 to 8 months. In the last three months she's lost her ability to speak, the nimbleness in her hands so she can't write, her ability to feed herself so she's been on an IV of supplements directly into her stomach.

She's been progressively losing simple brain functions, for example, the other day she grabbed a glass of juice and put it to her lips but didn't tip it up. She mimed the act of drinking then set the glass down and wiped her mouth on the back of her sleeve. She got stuck in the bathroom, she couldn't grasp the concept of turning the knob and then pulling the door open.

Today it's progressed to the point of no return. The doctor predicts she won't last another 24 hrs. She's in her early 60's. My wife's with her now along with the rest of her family which is about 30 people altogether. I'm not their favorite person.

I will probably not be around much in the next couple of weeks. It falls to me to be the engine keeping our home running while she grieves. I'll probably pop in and read some posters for some comic relief but I doubt I'll have the energy to post anything for a bit.

Thanks for listening, make me laugh .. I'm going to need it.

Dang, man

That's some heavy s***

and the damn limbo scene can be a b****

I’m gonna send you a PM.
It’s a first draft of something I’m strongly contemplating getting published.
It’s too graphic to post here, and s/be at the very least a distraction for you.

Only thing, I’ll want some feed back.

But not right away.

Read it whenever you feel the need...or don't
Cheers, man.

Did motifake get an update? It seems different. Or I have not been here in a while. I don't know.

The only difference I’ve noticed is it’s dead as hell….but it’s summer in places.
The kids are outside.
Calm, occasional is good till they come back and kick it up a notch or two……or ten
