Hey kids (and Feas), yer hurtin’ my heart here damn it.

M0rd, my Alaskan bud goes back to the early ‘60s.
We’ve been thru some scrapes together.

He’s put himself thru hell and back several times, rafted over a falls (wife and brother died), crashed his bike (face and shoulder messed up), crashed his Cessna (walked away), got his kayak jammed under a log, upside down (thought he was dead), other things…..

I hate him because he abides on my isle, hunts my elk and deer, catches my king salmon, and eats like a hog, never gaining an ounce.
I’m down in Oregon, grubbin’ for fin clipped steelhead, getting a 50 lb salmon about once a decade, chasing black tail deer the size of dogs, and puttin’ on poundage just smellin’ my lady’s cookin’.

Yeah, I hate him.

I could easily beat on his craggy ol’ ass without remorse.

He’s hit on every woman I’ve had.
Bought the same damn vehicle I bought once.
Talks in excruciating droning detail about the proper maintenance of a backhoe.
Has a witless sense of humor.
Scrutinizes and analyses every blessed thing I say.

…….. and I love him.

I’d give my life for him

If it hurts... cut it out... and pickle it in a big jar and keep it to scare away stupid people.... odd relatives... brats etc.

OH! You mean That type of hate ok, no NOW I understand fully, I have one of those friends, but I knew him now for around 6 years, We're good buddies and always stuck together through the toughest shite imaginable...Highschool... nuff said.

Then again I don't know him that long, but still, I wouldn't be too surprised that our friendship takes the same route and ending up such as yours with your 'be-hated' buddy up in Alaska. That is a special kind of friend, testing the relationship and making sure that you 2 will stick together, a friendship is nothing without humour and hate. Same as a relationship, the little bloody pestering PAINFULLY irritating things... everyone has them, if you can't look past them... sorry, there won't be a long term relationship (Couple or friends that is)

axeman, nice to see you again.....

Hope yer not berating Jimi...He's a bit of a god from another time...........

Friendships

Some are fleeting, cherished, but fleeting, becoming a fond grey recollection over time. Even names are lost, but events, mannerisms, and comments are forever etched.

The good ones are precious few, maybe even just one.

One, of which is a given will not betray you.
It builds your own ability in your innermost being to also be true to a fellow man, no matter the circumstance.

They are lifetime.

Solitary, standing alone.

It could even be a hunting buddy, only meeting in the season. But you look forward all year, not for the hunt, but for the kinship.
One, a jabberer, walking the deer trail, blathering, rifle slung on the shoulder, jaws eternally jacked, stepping on dry sticks, laughing.
The other, listening, not to the banter, but for the odd sounds.
Looking for the out of context movement of a leaf on a bush, the broken geometry of a horizon.
Feeling the wind direction.

I would trade a hundred lone conquests for one such trek, and the nourishment of that inane repartee.

If you were referring to me with this part, no, not at all, wouldn't do that about anyone's friend... unless they are a real f-ed up and hopeless rude, ill mannered case that is.

Such a fine set of words, unfortunately I had not had the privilege to hunt (anything more than pigeons that I shot at my aunts house... hmmmmm, they make one fine meal... dry as hell, but throw them in a pot with some vegetables, potato salad and you got yerself a real fine meal.) though I would love to one day. anyway, long time from now.

Can only imagine listening vaguely to your buddy talking and focusing most attention to any and all details of the environment, making sure that that prize kill won't get away.
