And yes, I'm a nerd, and yes, I grew up reading DC more than Marvel ( I always thought that Jack Kirby art from Marvel made everyone's skin look like it was shiny metal. I didn't get it at the time.)

I believe it was a fragment of the spaceship his parents sent him to earth in. It 'just happened' to be curved enough to focus his heat vision enough. Likewise, his glasses were made from pieces of glass from the spacecraft's windshield--
