Classic tactic, the enemy infantry will take too much time to hit and use too much ammo, so priority is given to MG gunners, Scouts, snipers, of course and then the chain of command (Officers, LT's, Colonels, Generals, etc)

My grandfather said the unit he was in had a Sniper/Sharpshooter and he traveled with two other soldiers and they were in the heat of battle just like everyone else. He mainly acted as support for the infantry and picked off MG gunners and other Snipers.
